US EPA methane regulations

Supporting compliance with the latest EPA regulations

Operators of oil and gas sites can count on Nubo Sphere to secure compliance with EPA regulations and maintain efficient operations—whether using Nubo Sphere as an EPA approved continuous monitoring solution or for periodic screenings.

Maximizing flexibility, minimizing follow-up requirements

Nubo Sphere is a continuous methane emissions monitoring solution. But used for periodic screenings, it offers a number of advantages over traditional technologies. Nubo Sphere has been approved by the EPA as an advanced methane detection technology for periodic screening, and will be also up for approval as a continuous monitoring solution.

Approval for periodic screenings makes Nubo Sphere usable in place of, or alongside, traditional AVO, OGI and Method 21 surveys, and subject to the same standards for surveying and reporting.

The Nubo Sphere advantage

Full flexibility

Choose a detection threshold between 1 and 15 kg/h and a corresponding screening frequency that best fits your sites' emission profiles

Don't fly in blindly

Data between screening periods gives you all the insights you need to prepare and clean your sites well in advance

Efficient reporting

Keep follow-up requirements to a minimum. Note that reporting is only required if the average emission rate over a screening window of a few hours exceeds the chosen detection threshold

Know your sites in and out

24/7 coverage and super emitter detection come "for free"

Periodic surveys but with a continuous monitoring solution. How would such a workflow under US EPA’s methane regulations look like?

Operators are free to choose from 5 to 6 survey frequencies linked to detection limits between 1 and 15 kg/h per EPA. Sensirion Connected Solutionshas received approval for Nubo Sphere for all frequencies and detection thresholds. This grants operators deploying Nubo Sphere maximum flexibility to choose the monitoring plan that best fits their operations.

With sensor nodes installed and operating continuously, monthly surveying at the highest detection threshold of 15 kg/h is easily attainable. Meanwhile, follow-up obligations can be limited through site preparation, being required only if detected emissions meet or exceed 15 kg/h. Should a follow-up OGI survey be required due to a detection with Nubo Sphere, it can substitute the additionally required annual OGI inspection. Check out the following example showcasing how to use Nubo Sphere for monthly screenings at a detection threshold of 15 kg/h.
